Your brain is just bad at comebacks

The perfect response hits you at 2am. Not during the actual conversation where it would have been useful. Not even an hour after. No. It shows up right as you're falling asleep, fully formed, devastatingly clever, and completely useless.

Scientists call this "l'esprit de l'escalier" which is French for "the wit of the staircase." Basically your brain figures out the perfect thing to say right as you're walking out the door. The French had to name it because apparently this has been a human problem for centuries. We have always been terrible at real-time verbal sparring.

It is not really about wit. Your brain processes faster when it is warmed up. That sluggish morning version of you that nods along to things you disagree with and only forms opinions three hours later? That is a processing speed problem. Your brain is running on dial-up while the conversation is happening at broadband speed.

Coffee does not make you smarter. Let's be clear about that. But it does knock the cobwebs off your processing speed early enough to matter. The difference between blank stare you and sharp response you is often just one decent cup hitting your system at the right time.

It means honoring the farmers who hand‑pick each cherry.

It means protecting the land that sustains every harvest.

It means roasting with intention, never cutting corners.”

Already halfway through my second cup,
