Your brain runs on safe mode until coffee

Posted 11/9/2026

Your reflection isn't broken. Your brain just hasn't loaded yet.

There's actual science behind that foggy, slightly delayed feeling you get when you stumble to the mirror each morning. Your brain wakes up in stages, not all at once like some cheerful cartoon character. It crawls out of sleep mode slowly, blinking, confused, and honestly a little offended that it has to exist again so soon.

The part of your brain responsible for processing what you see is still buffering. So when you stare at your reflection and it feels like it's moving a half second behind you, that's not the mirror lying. That's your brain running on the absolute minimum settings required to keep you upright and not walking into walls.

Scientists call it sleep inertia. The rest of us call it Tuesday.

What's wild is that this foggy delay can last anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour depending on how deep your sleep was. Your reaction time is slower, your thinking is fuzzier, and your ability to care about anything is basically non-existent. You're technically awake but operating like a laptop with seventeen browser tabs still loading from the night before.

And then coffee happens.

Something shifts. The fog lifts. Your reflection actually looks like it belongs to you again. The world sharpens up and suddenly you remember your name and have opinions about things.

That little moment right there is what Black Coffee Please Newsletter is all about. Every issue digs into the weird, wonderful, and slightly absurd world of coffee, from the roasters

Roaster/Cafe Notes:

Sought & Found (https://www.soughtxfound.coffee/ )

Calgary

In their own words: “Pure. Fine. Ethical. This is the coffee we serve.

We are a local coffee shop and roaster in Calgary, which started out of a passion for coffee, a very small dream, and just a tiny bit of courage. We spent a few years getting ourselves professionally trained in tasting, roasting, and brewing, but more than anything, it humbles us with the realization of how vast the world of specialty coffee is. We can only strive to serve our best, and keep learning how to make better coffee, and be a better ambassador for what we believe in.

We choose to present our coffees in a way that is representative of their true quality and character, and of the hard work by everyone who poured and risked so much into growing and finding them. We hope that by purchasing and showcasing good quality specialty coffee, we are supporting a truly sustainable trading practice for farmers at origins.”
